 우주의 소리같은 낯설고 신비함속에 짙은 우수를 느끼게 한다. 그래서, 눈물을 자아내게 하는 전자음악. 실험적인 음악으로 쟝르를 넘나들며 독특한 음악을 들려주는 천재음악가, Thomas Dolby가 1984년 발매한 앨범의 동명 타이틀송.The flat earth - ㅎㅎ 많이 해 본 멘트네. 

 아! 1984년.
 황인용의 영팝스였을것이다. 시그널 음악으로 쳑맨죤의 프루겔 혼 연주가 나오던...  
새로운 음반을 소개하던 코너에서 이곡을 듣게 되었다. 너무나 좋아서 당시 빽판이라고 하는 복사판 레코드를 사서 들었다. 같은 앨범에 수록된 I scare myself 는 천재적인 음악적 실험에 지친 마음을 달래주는듯하다.
 
 얼마나 세월이 지났나? 
30년 가까이...
그는 지금도 음악적 영감을 찾고 있다. 오랜만에 발표한 재즈풍의 노래
'사랑은 장전된 피스톨이라네', 반갑고 멋진 곡이다.

 저는 TED를 위해서 거의 10년동안을 연주해오고 있는데 제 본인의 어떤 신곡을 연주해 본적이 매우 드물었습니다. 그것은 대부분 그동안 신곡이 거의 없었던 것이 이유였죠.

저는 몇개의 프로젝트로 바빴었는데, 그들중의 하나는 이것, 넛매그 (Nutmedg), 1930년대 배의 구명보트인데, 그것은 제가 영국에 있는 제 해안별장의 정원에서 복구시켜오고 있는 것이지요. 그래서, 이제는, 그 북극의 만년설이 녹았을때, 저의 녹음 스튜디오가 궁형처럼 솟아날 것 것이고, 저는 익사당한 세계속으로 부유해 갈 것입니다. J.G. 발라드 소설에서 나오는 사람의 성격같이. 낮에는, 그 넛메그(Nutmeg) 는 조타실의 지붕에서와 450와트의 터빈의 솔라패널애서 돛의 위로 에너지를 모읍니다. 어두워졌을때는, 제게는 충분한 동력이 있게 됩니다. 그래서 저는 넛매그(Nutmeg)를 횃블처럼 밝힐 수 있습니다. 그래서 저는 아침의 이른 시간까지 그곳에 갑니다. 그리고 새로운 노래를 짓습니다. 저는 여러분께 연주해드리고 싶습니다, 만약 여러분께서 그것을 듣는 첫번째 관중이 되어주실 의지가 있으시다면요.

I've been playing TED for nearly a decade and I've very rarely played any new songs of my own. And that was largely because there weren't any.  
(Laughter)  
So I've been busy with a couple of projects, and one of them was this, the Nutmeg, a 1930s ship's lifeboat, which I've been restoring in the garden of my beach house in England. And, so now, when the polar ice caps melt, my recording studio will rise up like an ark, and I'll float off into the drowned world like a character from a J.G. Ballard novel. During the day, the Nutmeg collects energy from solar panels on the roof of the wheelhouse, and from a 450-watt turbine up the mast. So when it gets dark, I've got plenty of power. And I can light up the Nutmeg like a beacon. And so I go in there until the early hours of the morning. And I work on new songs. I'd like to play to you guys, if you're willing to be the first audience to hear it.  
(Applause)  
It's about Billie Holiday. And it appears that, some night in 1947, she left her physical space and was missing all night, until she reappeared in the morning. But I know where she was. She was with me on my life boat. And she was hot.
